Adults produce loud repetitive sounds as a form of communication. When shoebill chicks solicit food their sound is similar to a human with hiccups. The majority of that population is concentrated in South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia. The shoebill produces its sound by clapping the lower jaw and upper jaw of its bill together producing a loud hollow sound. Currently, the IUCN estimates there are between 3,300 and 5,300 adult shoebills left in the wild. In some areas, shoebills are also hunted for food, while in others they are killed because they are seen as bad omens. Habitat destruction and industrial pollution are affecting populations. Unfortunately, as one might imagine, the shoebill's major predator is us. To fend off predators from stealing eggs, shoebills build their nests in places that are difficult to reach, and they aren't afraid to get aggressive to defend that nest. In the wild, they can live for nearly 36 years and, as one might imagine, adults don't have major predators. Even mating pairs search for food on opposite ends of the territory. Bape Fiends - I'm At The Combination Presidential Inauguration And Furry Con (Shoebill Remix) 26 days ago. Interestingly, shoebills don't live in groups. But they can also hunt monitor lizards, baby crocodiles, turtles, and frogs. They primarily feast on lungfish, bichirs, catfish, and tilapia. Fish is the main component of their diet. Though shoebills are carnivores, they're looking for small prey. If you were wondering what these prehistoric-looking birds eat, don't worry-humans aren't on the menu. Then, they'll clatter their bills, much like storks do, to communicate with one another. Shoebills are typically silent except when they arrive at the nest. The shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) also known as whalehead or shoe-billed stork, is a. They're not only deliberate in their movements but also in their sounds. This means that they simply fall forward on their prey with their beaks wide open, scooping up their meal. And when the time is right, they make their move by exhibiting a behavior called collapsing. Shoebills can stand motionless for hours, waiting for the perfect moment to catch their prey. Just their clog-like beak, alone, measures a foot long and nearly half a foot wide.īut if you came upon a shoebill, there's a good chance you'd be intimidated not only by the size but the fact that they don't move. Though theyre mainly silent, shoebills sometimes engage in bill-clattering, a sound made as a greeting. They can reach up to five-feet high with an eight-foot wingspan, making them fairly intimidating. A shoebill, Balaeniceps rex, at the Houston Zoo. Thanks to their stature, they truly are kings of their environment. Their thin legs with large feet give them the ability to wade through the vegetation of swamps and marshes from Ethiopia to Zambia. The shoebill's natural habitat is the swamps of eastern Africa. It’s telling that the developers actually included a couple of ways to deal with particularly tough levels. Super Monkey Ball could’ve learned a thing or two from Peggle about dispensing serotonin. What’s especially draining is that after finishing a particularly difficult level, there’s no satisfying adrenaline rush that accompanies overcoming a challenge - just a sense of relief that it’s finally over. The more I played past a certain point, the more it felt like a chore. If only a few levels were designed like this it’d be easier to dismiss that feeling, but after the halfway point most of them start to feel this way.Īnd while the environments and backgrounds might be fun and colorful, much of the playable level design is repetitive and uninspired. When I finally managed to land in the right place and stay put, it didn’t feel like I’d mastered the obstacles of that particular level it felt like a lucky run that I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to replicate. Other attempts ended after I landed on one of the higher platforms and bounced right off again. The first time, I was thrown directly into a connecting pole and bounced off the map before I even had a chance to move. Because you can only tilt the camera up so far, I couldn’t see where the finish line was - instead, I had to roll onto a ground-level platform that thrust my ball upwards and try to figure it out in the air. That’s exactly what happened in one of the levels that made me want to pull my hair out: before me stood a towering theme park ride made up of platforms connected to a pole in the middle. Early levels might challenge you to make your way around a winding path or keep your momentum going long enough to clear a gap later on, you’ll be thrust into the air by spring-loaded platforms and fail the level before you even have a chance to adjust the camera to see a hazard you didn’t know would come at you from that direction. The difficulty in Story mode really ramps up around the halfway point, going from light and breezy to a frustrating exercise in failure very quickly. The problem with both the Story and Challenge modes is that, after 30 or 40 levels, they both begin to feel like a slog. Tailored to contemporary composers and sound designers, it delivers a detail-layered sound design environment that covers the full process of crafting custom instrument libraries. The Library Creator converts all HALion Sonic presets to HALion Sonic SE presets and all the necessary source files of the library are written into the VST Sound files.HALion 6 takes the flexibility and freedom that HALion has offered to the next level. In the Library Creator, build your VST Sound file(s) as HALion Sonic SE library. In this step, you should set the MediaBay tags. It is important to keep this in mind when modifying these settings. The Program and Inserts tabs are not available in HALion Sonic SE and the user cannot change the settings you make here. The macro pages of the Layers can be accessed in HALion Sonic SE via the L1 to L4 tabs. You can even load more than one layer of your instrument and adjust the parameters on the Program tab. In this step, you tweak parameters on the macro page, add effects on the Inserts tab, assign quick controls, etc. Load the Layer in HALion Sonic and do the sound design. Once your instrument is set up correctly and works the way you want it, you can move on to the next step. Then, you must export the instrument again as HALion Sonic SE Layer preset, load it in HALion Sonic, test it, etc. If you find issues, you need to go back to the original HALion Program preset from step 1 and correct whatever you found. In this step, you should test your instrument thoroughly. Load the exported Layer in HALion Sonic. This step makes it possible to load the instrument you created in HALion as a Layer in HALion Sonic. Export the instrument/program as HALion Sonic SE Layer preset. While working in HALion, the instrument is saved as Program preset. This creates a canvas with the correct size for the HALion Sonic (SE) macro page. When creating the macro page, you must select Create HALion Sonic Macro Page. In this step, you add sublayers and samples, adjust the mapping, write scripts, build the macro page, etc. To build a library that works in HALion Sonic SE, proceed as follows:īuild the instrument in HALion. Library Creation Process Library Creation Workflow The macro page can be of any reasonable size. The versions 3.2 and higher do not have this restiction. In previous versions of HALion Sonic (SE) (< 3.2) the maximum size of the macro page was limited to 595 x 390 pixels. HALion Sonic SE is freely available for download on the Steinberg website. Most often, you will probably want to build your library so that it works with HALion Sonic SE, which means that it can be used by everybody. However, this limits the number of potential users. You could build a library that only HALion users can use, which gives you the freedom to build a program with a different structure, for example. HALion libraries are only compatible with HALion. HALion Sonic libraries are compatible with HALion. HALion Sonic SE libraries are compatible with HALion Sonic and HALion. The number of instrument layers is limited to four and certain MIDI modules are always needed. HALion Sonic and HALion Sonic SE have restrictions regarding the program structure.HALion allows you to create libraries for all these plug-ins.īefore you create a library, you must decide who your target users or customers are and in which plug-in you want the library to work. The HALion family consists of the plug-ins HALion, HALion Sonic and HALion Sonic SE. For more details on using the Library Creator, see steinberg.help / HALion 6 / Library Creator. For example, you might want to put the presets into one VST Sound file and the samples into another. A library can be created as a single VST Sound file or as a combination of VST Sound files. The Library Creator allows you to write VST Sound files that contain all the necessary source files of a library. HALion libraries incorporate many source files, such as presets, samples, macro pages, MIDI modules, scripts, and sub presets. For more details regarding the Library Manager, see steinberg.help / VST Manuals / Library Manager. Once a VST Sound file is registered in the MediaBay, it is mounted, and all compatible Steinberg products can access the folders and files within it. The Library Managerallows you to manage the VST Sound files of a library on your computer and to register them to the MediaBay. It contains a file structure with folders and files. HALion allows you to create your own libraries and distribute them as VST Sound files. VST Sound is a Steinberg file format that can be compared to ZIP or ISO files, for example. Expanding to four and five note songs keeps them progressing at a comfortable pace while broadening the selection of songs they can play. Starting with three-note recorder music allows students to play a few recognizable songs while mastering their first few notes. You also need to make sure that notes are introduced gradually so that novice recorder players aren’t overwhelmed. Students love to be able to play songs they know, so familiar tunes are a good place to start. That’s a pretty exciting event! (If you don’t think so, then you’ve never tried to tell a classroom full of elementary students holding recorders not to play them.)Īs you guide your students through this momentous musical experience, it’s important that you have well-designed beginner recorder sheet music to use. For most students, it’s the first time they’ve played any type of musical instrument. But recorders play an important role in many kids’ music education. You don’t see them in symphony orchestras, you don’t find albums of recorder music, and you rarely see anyone over the age of ten playing one (unless they are a music teacher). Recorders don’t get the respect that other instruments do. Thus, the pulse propagation in a nonlinear periodic structure (FBG) exhibits different kinds of fundamentally unique and technologically interesting regimes. The observation of solitons in FBG also paves the way for many potential applications, such as all optical-logic gates, pulse compression, all-optical switching, and limiting. Recent developments in theory as well as experimental investigations of these solitons provide a wide scope for realizing many devices such as optical add/drop multiplexers, optical filters, and sensors that ultimately could improve the OFC and sensor technology. Thus, based on the pulse frequency spectrum with respect to PBG, solitons in FBG can be classified into two categories, namely Bragg grating solitons and gap solitons. They are referred to in this way because the frequency of the incident pulse exactly matches the Bragg frequency. They are often referred to as gap solitons if their spectra lie well within the frequency (photonic) bandgap. As a result, there is a formation of slowly traveling localized envelope in FBG structures known as, in general, Bragg grating solitions. We can also expect a similar soliton-type pulse formation in FBG where the strong grating-induced dispersion is exactly counterbalanced by the Kerr nonlinearity through the SPM and cross-phase modulation effects. It is obvious that the soliton in fibers is formed after the exact balancing of GVD arising as a combination of material and waveguide dispersion with that of the SPM due to Kerr nonlinearity. Porsezian, Krishnan Senthilnathan, in Guided Wave Optical Components and Devices, 2006 6 SOLITONS IN FBG The units of chromatic dispersion are picoseconds per nanometer-kilometer that is, for a 1-nm, free-space wavelength change, this gives the number of picoseconds of delay change per kilometer of fiber length. The ratio of velocity change to wavelength change due to this effect is known as waveguide dispersion.Īs with modal dispersion, chromatic dispersion is a linear function of transmission system length. Since the refractive index is different in the core than in the cladding, a change in mode field diameter also results in a change in average dispersion index and, therefore, signal velocity. In optical fibers, the signal travels partially in the core and partially in the cladding, and the total mode field diameter changes with wavelength. It is the sum of two factors: material dispersion-a measure of the change in refractive index of the glass with wavelength-and waveguide dispersion. Chromatic dispersion is a measure of the degree to which the effective propagation velocity changes as a function of wavelength. With the large modal dispersion eliminated, more subtle dispersion mechanisms become the limiting factors. We report here our recent advances on the fabrication of single-mode highly nonlinear lead-silicate MOFs with low dispersion and dispersion slope values at 1.55 micron.David Large, James Farmer, in Broadband Cable Access Networks, 2009 4.4.3 Chromatic (Wavelength) Dispersion However, for such applications as wavelength-conversion, optical parametric amplification, supercontinuum generation etc, apart from a high gamma value, it is equally desirable that the nonlinear fiber also exhibits near-zero dispersion and dispersion slope at the operating wavelengths. Due to the higher linear (n) and nonlinear refractive index (n2 > 2) of non-silica glasses as compared to silica, it has been demonstrated that the effective nonlinearity (gamma) of a non-silica glass MOF can be between 2-4 orders of magnitudes higher than that of the conventional silica fiber (gamma ~ 1 /W /km), thus enabling the realisation of compact nonlinear devices operating at practical power levels. The novel optical properties of MOFs arise from the combination of wavelength-scale features in the fiber cross-section with the large index-contrast of the materials comprising the microstructured cladding. Microstructured optical fiber (MOF) technology has generated several new opportunities for the implementation of optical fibers with novel properties and functions. President Cyril Ramaphosa last week declared a national state of disaster in response to the power crisis.īREAKING | NPA declines to prosecute in death of Anele Tembe, fiancée of AKA Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said a national disaster may be declared by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, "where disastrous events occur or threaten to occur in more than one province". "The National Disaster Management Centre has, in terms of Section 23 of the Disaster Management Act, classified the impact of current, above-normal rainfall in various parts of the country – with Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape as the most affected – as a national disaster." In an unexpected statement on Monday night, the Presidency said the declaration would enable "an intensive, coordinated response" to the impact of flooding in Mpumalanga, the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, the Northern Cape, and North West. Government had declared a national state of disaster following flooding across the country. JUST IN | Government declares national state of disaster in response to widespread floods But it’s not necessarily the best in both of these categories, not to mention it costs a bit more than other sims at $20, still it’s a very solid sim. In my opinion, Liftoff is a great sim for both racing and freestyle. Just google “download steam” and you will find it. It’s available on Steam – a platform where you can purchase and download games, it helps you manage games and makes updating much easier. Liftoff is the only sim that supports 3D mode (reversing motors in flight). That really shows some real consideration for those who just love the aerial ballet. Liftoff has a ‘Freestyle Mode’ which rates your moves and tricks as you was in a competition. Recent updates have made the game easier to run on older PC’s, so it’s worth a try. Many people with slow computers complain about the performance being sluggish, floaty and choppy. Liftoff is also the most graphically intensive simulator in the list, it takes a decent spec gaming PC to run smoothly. It forces you to be more aware of obstacles and fly more carefully, hence offering a more realistic flying experience. It’s one of the few sims that accounts for propeller damage (can be disabled too). Liftoff is the first to implement a “parts system” that allows you to customize your drone by changing components just like in real life. The amount of content is simply impressive, nothing comes close in terms of selection of hundreds of models and thousands of tracks created by the community. Liftoff is one of the most mature FPV sims out there in terms of features and content. One of the most complete simulators with regular content updates, has a large online community. Now let’s dive into each FPV simulator and talk about their features, pro’s and con’s. In this tutorial I will show you how to flash EdgeTX. It makes the physics in the sim feel more realistic. EdgeTX is a fork of OpenTX, and it addresses the issue since version 2.5. OpenTX works just fine by all means, but if you want to have the best possible experience flying simulators, I recommend flashing EdgeTX to your OpenTX radio. If you are using an OpenTX radio, then you should know that OpenTX actually has a bug that introduces high USB link latency. Spend time on actually practicing rather than worrying about the physics. Just pick a simulator that feel real enough for you with graphics that you like (and runs smoothly on your computer). The point of a simulator is to help you learn how to fly and build up muscle memory. They are getting closer and closer to real life, but it will probably never going to feel the same. The physics of a drone simulator is highly subjective. Does Quadcopter Simulator Physics Matter? If you have a radio that don’t support that, there are work-arounds, such as using a flight controller and radio receiver. Then you should be able to use the radio in the simulator, it’s that simple. In the market for a new radio? See my radio recommendations here.Īll the radios I recommend are plug and play – just connect the USB cable and it will show up as a gaming joystick on your computer. You can continue to use the same radio to fly the real drones later, so it’s a worthy long term investment. Using a proper radio is the best way to build up muscle memory, and get the most benefit from training. I don’t recommend using gaming console or keyboard. What You Need to Fly FPV Simulatorsīefore picking an FPV simulator, you should get a radio controller first. If you are new, here is an article to show you some insight of racing drones and how to get started. Featured image is from “Unreal FPV” simulator. Video can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: How to Fly Upside Down with Nirvana TX | FPV Mini Quad Liftoff Simulator () Only in simulators you are practice tricks that are almost impossible in real life :D Whether you are totally new or someone experienced learning a challenging acrobatic trick, simulators can be highly effective for beginners and advanced pilots alike. Honestly it’s the best way to get started for beginners and to improve flying skills. You can learn how to fly FPV drones on a computer FPV simulator. They are basically games where you can control a simulated FPV drone with a radio. The best part about Steam is that, if you don’t like the sim you purchased for some reason (maybe your computer is too slow to run it), you might be able to get a refund if your play time is within 2 hours. Some of these simulators are on Steam (a video game platform). |
